July Property sales were 13, up 225.0% from 4 in July of 2010 and 44.4% higher than the 9 sales last month. July 2011 sales were at their highest level compared to July of 2010 and 2009. July YTD sales of 51 are running 27.5% ahead of last year’s year-to-date sales of 40.

The Total Inventory of Properties available for sale as of July was 55, up 3.8% from 53 last month and up 7.8% from 51 in July of last year. July 2011 Inventory was at highest level compared to July of 2010 and 2009.

The number of New Listings in July 2011 was 16, down 15.8% from 19 last month and up 14.3% from 14 in July of last year.

 “The Breeders’ Cup is the racing version of the World Series,” said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club spokesman Mac McBride. “If you’re thinking football, it would be the Super Bowl. In soccer, the World Cup.”

The two-day event attracted a record-breaking 114,353 racing fans last year at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. It had a reported $60 million economic impact on Southern California when it was hosted in Santa Anita Park in both 2008 and 2009, said Breeders’ Cup spokesman Jim Gluckson.

Over the years, the crowd has shifted from high-stakes gamblers and stars to more families wanting to leave the summer heat of Texas, Arizona and Nevada. They prefer places by the racetrack, and if it’s within their price range, close to the ocean. They come because parents like to go to the races and kids have the beach,” said Leslie Welsh, a vacation rental agent.

An elite few, mainly the 100-plus who work at the racetrack, stay the whole season, or seven weeks. Those tenants have included famous jockeys like Victor Espinoza and trainers like Bob Baffert.

Vacationers in general pay about $1,500 to $3,000 a week during the racing season and rent places, from as far north as Oceanside.
